In order to further the transition to a low-carbon economy, improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energies in public infrastructures, EMT Madrid has been working on the electrification of its fleet and the corresponding adaptation of its operations centres for more than a decade. In this case, fifty recharging points for EMT buses have been installed at the Carabanchel operations centre, which has required increasing the total power of the centre by an extra 15,000 kW. This increase in power required laying two new underground medium voltage lines of 7,500 kW each to reach the operations centre. Furthermore, in addition to establishing the necessary connections from the connection points to the Carabanchel operations centre to increase the power, it has also been necessary to install the appropriate equipment to operate the fifty charging points for electric buses. This installation includes the coupling and assembly of the manoeuvre centres and the electrical panels for the correct performance of the recharging points. This project also constitutes an investment that improves the energy management of the Carabanchel operations centre, thus increasing energy efficiency standards in public infrastructures and reducing energy consumption in Madrid; this improvement also naturally implies a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels and CO₂ emissions. The European Regional Development Fund is co-financing this project with €1,618,025.17.
