As part of its commitment to decarbonising the city of Madrid and to sustainable mobility based on a low-emission model, Madrid’s municipal transport agency now operates a 100% clean-energy vehicle fleet, as required by the relevant European legislation. In line with this commitment, EMT Madrid is already acquiring fleet vehicles that will enable it to continue to meet these commitments: in addition to 306 100% electric buses, the municipal operator will soon take possession of 10 buses powered by green hydrogen. All of these acquisitions involve European funding from the NextGenerationEU funds.
The modernisation of the EMT vehicle fleet aims to create attractive alternatives for travelling around the city, not only reinforcing the public transport facilities in themselves, but also strengthening their social role. In addition to providing passengers with an excellent service the agency also assumes its responsibility to care for the environment. The acquisition of these 100% electric buses will thus involve a considerable improvement in energy efficiency and will promote a change of mode towards more sustainable means of transport, thus prioritising public transport rather than private travel. Furthermore, by transforming its fleet, EMT is making decisive progress towards its goal of becoming a green, decarbonised company with a sustainable energy model. In this context, the commitment to green hydrogen as a fuel for Madrid's urban buses represents a revolution in public passenger transport, as, in addition to the vehicles, the company will also have a hydrogen plant to produce its own hydrogen at the Entrevías Operations Centre. The total amount of financing provided by the European Union for the purchase of these buses corresponds to a maximum sum of €63,700,000.
